Where does the Middleweight division go from here?
Before Saturdays UFC I wrote “What was next for Anderson Silva”. In there I stated the fight between Nate Marquardt & Demian Maia was the key to this puzzle. I figured if Maia won he’d get the first shot at Silva over Dan Henderson. Though if Marquardt won I assumed he’d fight Henderson first since both had already fought Silva, and lost.
Well Nate Marquardt knocked out Demian Maia 21 seconds into the fight Saturday and what happens next is now cloudy. During the interview inside the cage Marquardt called out Anderson Silva hoping to get him inside that cage. Silva stayed in his chair though and during the post fight news conference said he wanted Marquardt & Henderson to fight to see whose next. As for Dan Henderson, after knocking out Michael Bisping at UFC 100 he thought he was next in line.
With all this swirling the subject has been pretty popular on net. Zak Woods of WatchKalibRun has a great article asking why not give both Henderson & Marquardt a title shot. Josh Gross wrote that if the UFC offered Henderson the Marquardt fight he’d turn it down saying Anderson Silva is the only opponent he’ll consider right now at 185 pounds.
I want to see Henderson fight Marquardt purely as a fan, but I think having them each fight Silva is better for the UFC. I guess if the fight is meant to happen then I’ll see it down the road. Bottom line here is that any of these fights should be good ones.
