Ultimate Fighter coaches should not be Champions
There has been some talk after Saturdays win by Dan Hardy that he and Georges St. Pierre might coach the upcoming season 11 of the Ultimate Fighter. I do not like this idea and more so don’t like a current title holder being a coach on the show at all. The last time a Champion held the title while coaching the show was season 7 (Rampage vs. Forrest) where Rampage was the champ and the two were to fight after the show concluded. While I like the idea of the coaches fighting its the title being put on hold that I don’t like.
Rampage had fought and defeated Dan Henderson at UFC 75 and shortly after that agreed to do the show. After taping and then letting the show play out it was 10 long months before him and Forrest fought at UFC 86. That’s is far too long for the title to be placed on hold especially with the current run of injuries to champions. The Ultimate fighter show itself is a hype machine for the two coaches and a title fight doesn’t need that. The show works best when its has two fighters that maybe don’t like each other (Ortiz vs. Shamrock or Hughes vs. Serra) but that will benefit from the hype the show will bring to their fight.
It was July 11th when St. Pierre last fought and he was injured and tentivaly suppose to be ready to fight early in 2010. With Dan Hardy just fighting last weekend he more then likely wouldn’t be ready to fight tell around March which should be perfect for St. Pierre to be ready. If they were to do the show that fight would have to wait tell at least July of 2010 making it over a year since St. Pierre last fought and 8 months for Hardy. St. Pierre is one of the best pound for pound fighters in the sport and a hugh fan favorite and pushing the fight back around 4 months for him to do the show is a bad idea.
Who do you think should coach season 11 of the Ultimate fighter?
