2 great cards in 2 weeks
The UFC has stacked two fight cards that will happen over the span of two weeks in March/April. These two events could have up to 4 title fights (interim Heavyweight) and should be solid from top to bottom. (*=not official)
UFC 111 will take place March 27th and will mark the return to New Jersey for the first time in over two years. Coming back to New Jersey is not the real reason to put on the mega event that reason lay northeast in New York. The UFC is desperately trying to get MMA legalized in New York and the counsel is suppose to vote later this year regarding MMA. The theory is that if they put on this mega show, it sells out and New Jersey loves it the NY counsel will see the dollar signs and legalize it. With the card announced so far it will easily selling out and make a ton of money so I see this tactic working
UFC 111: Newark, New Jersey – March 27th
Welterweight Champ Georges St. Pierre vs. Dan Hardy
Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin for the interim Heavyweight title
Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch
UFC 112 will mark the first ever UFC event in the United Arab Emirates when the cage lands in Abu Dhabi. The largest emirate by area and second largest population behind Dubai, Adu Dhabi is a market with an establish fan base that are already knowledgable in MMA due to the popularity of the Abu Dhabi Submission World Championship. That fan base is attractive to the UFC because of the money that market could bring in with ticket sales and Merchandise. Looking at it further though making a big splash could lead to bigger things like endorsments or a TV deal. Having possible two title fights and a Gracie on the fight card will make a splash that’s for sure.
UFC 112: Abu Dhabi, UAE – April 10th
Champ B.J. Penn vs. Gray Maynard/Frankie Edgar*
Champ Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort*
Renzo Gracie vs. Matt Hughes
