Anthony Ruiz pulls off minor upset over Hector Ramirez.
Last Thursday night MMA veteran Anthony Ruiz pulled off a minor upset when he defeated former UFC fighter Hector Ramirez by a narrow split decision. The fight was one of the main attractions of the night for Tachi Palace Fights III at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino, Lemoore, California. Ruiz (24-13) came into the fight on a two fight winning streak after winning only one of his previous 4 fights. Ramirez (8-3-1) was also riding a two fight win streak coming into the fight since losing to Forrest Griffin at UFC 72.
Ruiz looked to have a clear plan in his fight with Ramirez, keep it standing and throw bombs. Ruiz came throwing bombs but when Ramirez felt the power of Ruiz he took the fight to the ground. Ramirez took advantage and moved quickly to side control then took the back of Ruiz. Ruiz was game though and eventually escaped getting back to his feet and closed the round out with some very solid striking.
In the second round Ruiz began to take over the fight, keeping it standing and out striking Ramirez throughout the round. Entering the third and final round Ramirez looked to have little left in the tank while Ruiz kept pushing forward looking for the knockout. Though he never got the KO, Ruiz did keep the fight standing implementing his prefight plan. The fight went to the judges, which is always a dicey thing and sure enough the judges made us sweat calling the fight a split decision. They did get the winner right though which I guess is all that matters as Ruiz wins with scores of 29-28, 30-27, and 28-29.
