Roy Nelson set to face Cheick Kongo Next
Straight from the man himself, Roy Nelson is telling his fans that he will be fighting Heavyweight gatekeeper Cheick Kongo for his next fight. Nelson who is currently in Hawaii getting set to corner friend and fellow Ultimate Fighter 10 cast member Scott Junk for his Galaxy MMA fight May 1st. Posting the message via the internet, Nelson didn’t name an event or date for his fight with Kongo but it’s believed to be on UFC 116 on July 3rd. UFC 116 is where the Heavyweight title will once again be unified as Brock Lesnar will face Shane Carwin in the night’s Main event.
Nelson won the tenth season of the Ultimate Fighter by defeating Kimbo Slice, Justin Wren and James McSweeney to earn his spot in the finale against Brendan Schaub. Nelson who was the favorite coming into the show and surprisingly made short work of Schaub, knocking him out 3:45 seconds into the first round. Nelson’s next fight was at UFC Fight Night: Florian vs. Gomi, where he took on the skyscraper Stefan Struve brutally knocking him out in 39 seconds of round one.
Kongo is coming off a much needed win over fellow striker Paul Buentello at UFC on Versus were he forced him the submit to strikes. The win was much needed as Kongo had lost two in a row coming into the fight against top level competition. Kongo has settled into a gatekeeper role within the division with wins over many of the mid to low level Heavyweights. Though when Kongo steps into to the cage with a big guys in the division he walks out with a loss on his record.
On paper this fight look like one that Kongo will be in well over his head on but Nelson is working his way up the division and the match up makes a lot of sense. In Nelson’s accent up the ranks Kongo fits as the next in line for him. Unfortunately for Kongo and his non-existent ground game is Nelson is a BJJ Black belt who clearly has KO power in his hands as well. We have seen what happens when Kongo goes to the mat so it’s hard not to believe that won’t happen again here
