It comes as no surprise to us that Jake Shields is now part of the UFC. After finishing out his contract with Strikeforce, it was clear where Shields was headed. After weeks of speculating, it was finally made official that Shields would make his debut this October at UFC 121 against top ten welterweight Kampmann.
Shields (25-4-1) has gone back and forth from middleweight and welterweight throughout his career. In his most recent bouts, he has competed as a middleweight and won the Strikeforce title after defeating Jason “Mayhem” Miller by unanimous decision. He then went on to defend it against former Pride Champion Dan Henderson, also by unanimous decision. The signing of Shields will make for some exciting matchups in the future as he is expected to be the next title contender, should he defeat Kampmann.
Martin Kampmann (17-3) also has experience in both the middleweight and welterweight divisions. Since moving to 170 lbs. Kampmann has gone 4-1, with his only loss coming at the hands of Paul Daley. A win over Shields will be immense and possibly put him in line for a fight with Georges St. Pierre.
UFC 121 takes place on October 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The event is headlined by Brock Lesnar as he puts the UFC Heavyweight Championship on the line against Cain Velasquez.
