Jamie Varner trains in high elevation for WEC 51
On September 30th, live on Versus, Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone will rematch at WEC 51 inside the First Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. As Varner prepares in Flagstaff, Arizona for this very important fight, MMA Valor caught up with him to see how training was going. Varner has decided to spend the hardest week of his training camp in a higher elevation to match what he’ll be experiencing come fight night in Colorado.
Varner’s last meeting with Cerrone was almost a full five rounds, in which Jamie was winning on every card until an illegal knee forced the end of the fight and by rule, it went to the judges’ score cards for the decision.
Varner looked extremely focused on his striking and grappling while at the Martial Way Training Center in Flagstaff. The temperature was all the way up and the warehouse was secluded from the everyday big city Varner is used to at Arizona Combat Sports.
Varner put in a tough, fast paced 5 rounds in with other fighters, such as Jacob “tick tock” McClintock, Ryan Diaz, and Zack Surdyka. He finished up by doing over 6 three-minute rounds of grappling with them and the members from the Martial Way gym.
Varner mentioned that he is on his planned weight of somewhere below 175 lbs, and that he is feeling great and excited for the upcoming fight. Both of the fighters are coming off good performances and look to get another crack at the lightweight champion Benson Henderson. Henderson is rumored to be facing Anthony Pettis next at WEC 53, which will be in Arizona but nothing has been confirmed by the WEC.
Varner vs. Cerrone 1 left many fans wanting a rematch and now it’s finally going to happen. These two fighters really don’t care for each other either, so just sit back relax and enjoy the fireworks.

Well for Varner id say he better do everything he can
for the up coming cowboy bout . Because as we saw in there last bout cowboy is a 100% Gamer. And if not for some excellent acting by Varner after a at most glancing knee strike ended that bout.. Keep it undercontrol Cowboy and this is your fight to loose…..
LOKI.
Varner didn’t lose a minute of that fight for 4 full rounds, in the fifth he slowed but was still winning. Cerrone has always been a slow starter so yes you’re right, it is Cowboys fight to lose.
if jamie can touch Cowboys chin squarely then it”ll be naptime for Cerrone!!! U can qoute me on that too….:)
First of all the WEC has yet to announce Pettis vs. Henderson, my bet is Varner gets a shot at Ben in AZ (they both train there) if he can dispatch Cowboy without injury. Also, Cerrone did not look good in his last fight, he got choked out in a minute. Facts writer, facts.
