Megumi Fujii: Breaking Arms and Breaking Records
Posted by Matthew Wheeler (Featured Staff Writer)Oct 1
Megumi Fujii (22-0) has done the impossible last night, breaking the longest win streak in MMA, with a perfect record of 22-0 [*]. This fight took place Thursday evening on the Bellator 31 card against Lisa Ward, who lost to “Mega Megu” back in 2007 due to arm bar, but later pronounced the fight was stopped early and that she never tapped. One of the more notable perfect streaks came from another star of the Thursday night, Miguel Torres who rattled off 20 wins before he faltered.
This fight did not pan out as well for Lisa Ward, early into the first round Megumi Fujii applied an arm bar and cranked as hard as she could, leaving Lisa screaming in a deep submission. There was no doubt this time around, and Megumi Fujii has the record for longest perfect streak in MMA. Out of her 22 wins all but 3 have ended before the judges’ scorecards, 18 submissions and one knock out over every girl who came her way. There seems to be no more dominant submission fighter currently fighting in big MMA promotions then Megumi Fujii.
Zoila Frausto (9-1 MMA) will be Megumi Fujii’s next challenge at the tournaments finale October 24th at Bellator 34. Zoila edged out a controversial win over Jessica Aguilar, leaving many fans heckling after the fight, but could very well have gone either way. Zoila is a kickboxing and Muay Thai based fighter, with her only loss coming from the very well-rounded Miesha Tate, via 2nd round arm bar.
Events like these are putting women’s MMA on the map and creating more depth in the prospective weight classes, all while motivating more girls to participate in the sport. We see some great skills and technical game plans as fans and it’s nice to see dominant champions in every sex, shape and size.
Now more than ever the sport is becoming more main stream, which brings up a great question, how many more wins will be on Megumi Fujii’s record before the fight game catches up to her skill level?
[*] – It was brought to our attention that John Strawn during the early 2000′s rolled off an even greater streak of 30-0.
