Carlos Condit Eyes Title Shot at UFC 120

Since moving from the WEC into the UFC, welterweight standout Carlos Condit has made an impression within the division. This Saturday in the co-main event of UFC 120, Condit faces off against the last man to challenge Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight title, Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy.

As the former WEC Welterweight Champion, Condit knows what it takes to be the best in the division. During his reign as champion, the UFC acquired Condit as well as many other fighters from the WEC’s heavier weight divisions once the organization decided to focus more on the lower weight classes. In his debut within the UFC, Condit drew Martin Kampmann. The fight was close, but Kampmann got the judges’ nod.

Since his debut, Condit has won two straight. Most recently he defeated up and comer Rory MacDonald. The bout showcased Condit’s heart and ability to come back from a beating. MacDonald easily won both rounds one and two with effective wrestling and control of Condit. Even during the opening minutes it looked as if the young Canadian was on his was to a decision victory over a former champion, but Condit proved to have something left in the final minute. With about 30 seconds left, he used his last bit of energy to reverse MacDonald and gain a dominant position. From there, Condit was throwing everything he had, landing at will and with seven seconds left on the clock, the referee halted the bout. Even though he took a beating for most of the fight, Condit proved that he should never be counted out until the final bell rings.

Should Condit give a dominant performance of Hardy, he has an argument to be next for welterweight king Georges St. Pierre, though he will most likely need to fight at least once more time. Mainly due to the fact that Josh Koscheck is scheduled for his title bout this December, but also fighters like Jon Fitch, Martin Kampmann and Jake Shields are also near the top of the division.

UFC 120 takes place Saturday October 16 at the O2 Arena in London, England. The promotions British stars grace the card, with Michael Bisping headlining against Yoshihiro Akiyama.
