UFC 121: Five Questions that will be answered
We are now just hours away from UFC 121 in Anaheim, California tonight and the event looks to be a great one. As in ever event there are always questions coming into the fight that the fighters will look answer.
Tonight has its fair share of questions, here are the top five:
5 – Is Brendan Schaub ready to take that next step in the heavyweight division?
Brendan Schaub (6-1) will be facing arguably his toughest test tonight when he steps in against Gabriel Gonzaga (11-5). Since losing to Roy Nelson at the Ultimate fighter 10 finale, Schaub had reeled off two wins by TKO in a row. Schuab has improved in each of those fights and has never had a fight leave the first round. Gonzaga was knocked out his lost time out against Junior Dos Santos, but bring to the table a very well round game plus his BJJ black belt.
4 – Can Diego Sanchez get back in the win column?
Since his lose to BJ Penn for the UFC lightweight belt, Diego Sanchez (21-4) moved back up to the welterweight division where he lost to John Hathaway. He is staying in the welterweight division for the fight against Paulo Thiago (13-2). Both fighters are coming off losses, but Sanchez has lost two in a row and must get back in the win column.
3 – Can Tito Ortiz win a fight?
Tito Ortiz (15-7-1) and hasn’t won since October of 2006 and even his diehard fans are starting to question him. Ortiz is finally claiming to be 100% healthy and at 0-3-1 in his last four fights is desperately in needs of a victory. If Ortiz cannot beat his former Student, Matt Hamill (9-2) it might be time for him to hang them up.
2 – Is Jake Shields for real or over hyped?
Many people already thing Jake Shields (25-4-1) is overrated, but that seems pretty hash for a guy that hasn’t lost since 2004 going 14-0, while winning two championship belts. He’ll have his hands full with Martin Kampmann (17-3) tonight and a victory should prove all the haters wrong.
1 – Does the UFC have their first Mexican Heavyweight Champ?
UFC 121 has been heavily hyped as there has never been a Mexiacan UFC heavyweight champion and Cain Velasquez (8-0) could be the first. He’ll have to defeat the current champion, Brock Lesnar (5-1) though to make it happen. Both fighters have a wrestling base but Velasquez has shown to also be well-rounded. Lesnar is still fairly new to the sport and his third title defense tonight will be his toughest.
