TUF 12 Wildcard Picks were all about the Politics
On last week’s episode of The Ultimate Fighter the wildcard bout for the preliminary round was announced. As they typically do the two coaches and Dana White huddle up in a room and hammer out who should get a second chance at advancing to the quarter-finals.
Georges St-Pierre thought Aaron Wilkinson (Team Koscheck) and Dane Sayers (Team GSP) deserved the wildcard spots, while Josh Koscheck wanted Aaron Wilkinson (Team Koscheck) and Marc Stevens (Team Koscheck). If you look back at the season’s first episode Dana White told all the fighters to “fight your hearts out” because those who do will deserve the wildcard spot.
Three fighters left it all in the cage and clearly deserve the wildcard spots, Aaron Wilkinson and Andy Main from team Koscheck and Dane Sayers from Team GSP.
When Dana White announced Aaron Wilkinson would be the first fighter in the wildcard fight, no one was surprised. When he called Marc Stevens name as the second fighter, you could see the shock and disbelief on the faces of all the fighters.
In an interview with Shambala Sports last Thursday, TUF 12 fighter Kyle Watson weighed in on the wildcard situation and immediately cried, “Politics”. Watson thought that Dane Sayers and Andy Main deserved the nod for the wildcard and that “the criteria changed to the best chance to win over who fight hard,” Watson explained. Stevens was the first pick for team Koscheck and came in as one of the season favorites before he was quickly choked out by Cody Mckenzie.
Facing two fighters from team Koscheck in the wildcard fight will insure that another team Koscheck fighter will make the quarter-finals, making it five team GSP fighters to three for team Koscheck. Further-more it will insure that three or the four quarter-final match ups will be Red vs. Yellow.
Marc Stevens and Aaron Wilkinson face off in tomorrow’s episode at 10pm ET/PT on Spike TV.
