Interview: Whatever It Takes To Win for Will Kerr

The World Extreme Cagefighting organization will hold its final event this coming Thursday.   New London’s Will Kerr (9-2 MMA, 1-1 WEC) will meet Team Alpha Male’s Danny Castillo (9-3 MMA, 4-3 WEC) at WEC 53 at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona on December 16.  MMAValor.com caught up with Connecticut law man and WEC Lightweight Will Kerr to discuss his thoughts on his upcoming bout.

Staying true to his roots, Kerr chose to train close to home for this bout. “This time I stayed around here [New London], I didn’t travel too much this time” Kerr said.  One aspect that may have factored into his decision to stay close to home is Kerr is a full-time marshal at the New London court-house.  However, his job did not impede any of his training camp, “its [training camp] been going good this time, I have  been able to take some time off…I’ve used some of my vacation time to train a little bit more. I feel real good.”

Kerr continues to evolve as a fighter every time he steps into the cage. This is best illustrated by his last fight where he secured an arm bar victory against Karen Darabedyan at WEC 49 in just over one minute in the first round.  When asked if he was looking to utilize more of his submission skills against Castillo, Kerr quickly said “No, I wouldn’t say I’m looking for a submission.  I think I can win in different places. Anybody can get caught in a submission.” Although Kerr did not want to reveal his game plan, he did say “It depends on how he comes out. I think I’ll have the advantage either way, we’ll have to see how it goes.”

Both fighters have similar styles and are on the verge of establishing themselves in the UFC Lightweight roster.  “It should be an exciting fight. He’s [Castillo] a good wrestler and a good striker, good on the ground; wherever it goes it will be exciting.”  Kerr then went on to say “When he didn’t win, it was a while ago so I’m sure he’s gotten a lot better… I can’t really count on one aspect of his game being weaker than another.”

The modest Kerr is humbled to be on the final WEC card, saying, “I’m excited…the card is stacked. For the last card it can’t get much better.”  Kerr did not ask to be on the final WEC card, nor did he ask to fight Castillo, but was he thrilled when he got the call. “I don’t have enough fights to pick my opponents” Kerr said with a laugh.
