Jon Jones Gets Title Shot After UFC 126
Jon Jones went into last Saturdays UFC 126 with nothing but focus on getting the win over Ryan “Darth” Bader. Jones will now turn his attention to UFC 128 and attempting to win the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship from Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
Widely considered two of the top prospects at 205 lbs, Bader and Jones looked to get closer to a title shot with a win over the other. Jones used his reach and quick takedowns in the first round to remain in control, using effective grappling and positioning, securing a North-South choke early in the fight. Bader was able to weather the early storm, but couldn’t seem to land many strikes and his takedown attempts were thwarted by Jones.
The opening of the 2nd round saw the same with Jones taking the center of the octagon, landing a few strikes, and avoiding a few big power shots from Bader’s right hand. After a left hook seemed to stagger Bader, Jones moved in, at which point Bader seemed to pull guard. The Jackson MMA stand-out took advantage and secured a guillotine choke that forced Bader to tap at 4:02.
With his biggest win to date in hand, Rogan entered the cage to give the post-fight interview, informing Jones of the opportunity that awaited him.
“Here’s the situation: Rashad Evans was scheduled to face Shogun for the title, Rashad Evans is injured he blew out his knee. The UFC wants to give you the opportunity against Shogun Rua for the light heavyweight championship of the world,” Rogan informed Jones.
While the turn around will be a quick one, Jones was nothing more than happy for the opportunity, dropping to his knees, happy that all the hard work had paid off.
“I’m going for a world title, baby! Lets do it!”
Maurcio “Shogun” Rua, who defeated Lyoto Machida to win the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, entered the cage to congratulate Jones on the victory and gives his words on the fight.
“Jon Jones is a great (fighter) and I respect him,” Rua said through his translator. “I’m a professional fighter and I’ll fight anyone.”
Rua, who hasn’t fought since the win over Machida at UFC 113 back in May, will turn his attention from “Suga” Rashad Evans to one of the hottest prospects in the UFC, Jon Jones. The fight is still expected to take place at UFC 128 on March 19th at the Prudential Center in New Jersey as the nights main event.
