Jorge Santiago Returns to the UFC Middleweight Division
The former Sengoku middleweight champion Jorge Santiago, who was recently released from the troubled Japanese promotion, has been resigned to the UFC middleweight division late last week. Prior to Santiago entering the mix at middleweight the UFC had confirmed a bout between Brian Stann and Wanderlei Silva for UFC 130. However, Silva was very unenthusiastic about the bout against Stann, fearing he’d be portrayed as the bad guy.
With Santiago signed, reports have surfaced that Santiago will likely be the one taking on the “All American” Brian Stann instead of Silva. Santiago is coming off his second win against Kazuo Misaki, which Sherdog labeled as the 2010 Fight of the Year, while Stann is coming off of a devastating TKO win over Chris Leben at UFC 125.
Santiago’s first stint with the UFC was back in 2006 where he went 1-2 and was released following back to back losses to Chris Leben and Alan Belcher. Since then Santiago has gone 11-1, with wins over Jeremy Horn, Trevor Prangley and Kazuo Misaki to win the Sengoku middleweight title.
