Can Jon Jones live up to the Hype?
With the biggest win of his career coming just 5 weeks ago Jon “Bones” Jones will now face a mountain of a challenge in the form of current Light-Heavyweight Champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Jones rise to the title has been a quick one but to some MMA fans they feel it is a little too quick, only having been a part of the MMA scene for less than 3 years and at the young age of 23. Coming into his title fight on March 19, 2011 at UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones, “Bones” is currently an odds on favorite to take home the title, but does Jones have what it takes to live up to the hype?
Jones, who is a former NJCAA All-American, currently trains at Jackson’s Submission Fighting in Albuquerque, New Mexico with training partner and friend Rashad Evens. “Bones” possesses some of the most devastating spinning elbows in all of MMA and some of the trickiest submissions as well, making him seem like the total package. Jones has shown us that he is a force to be reckoned with wins over fighters Stephan Bonnar via Decision, Brandon Vera via TKO and most recently Ryan Bader via Submission. Jones’s Professional MMA record is currently 12-1 with 7 of those wins coming by way of Knockout but will he be able to use his 84.5 inch reach to out strike Rua?
Jon Jones is currently on a 3 fight win streak after a disappointing disqualification loss to Matt Hamill, due to illegal elbows. Mauricio Rua is the most experienced man that Jones will have faced to date, with wins over Chuck Liddell, Alistair Overeem and Quinton Jackson as well as being the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix Champion. “Shogun” will look to shut down the “hype train” of Jones but he will have his work cut out for him because as “Bones” has said he is not paying any attention to the hype and is just concentrating on becoming the youngest UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion.
