Bellator 40 Breakdown and Predictions
Coming to you from the First Council Casino in Newkirk, Oklahoma, season four of Bellator continues with Bellator 40 this Saturday April 9th. The finals of the welterweight and lightweight tournament will be set as the last of the semifinal bouts will take place on the main card of Bellator 40. A non title bout featuring the Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren against Nick Thompson will headline the night.
Here is the Bellator 40 fight card along with a breakdown of each of the main card bouts.
Main Card:
Ben Askren (7-0) vs. Nick Thompson (38-13-1) – Ben Askren
The very well traveled MMA veteran Nick Thompson will have his hands full against the blanket that is the Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren. With 52 fights under his belt Thompson will have the decisive experience advantage, while Askren will have the clear advantage wrestling. Askren will look to take Thompson down and grind him out for either a TKO or decision win. Thompson will need to keep the fight standing, but if the fight does go to the ground he must be in top position.
Season 4 Welterweight Tournament Semifinal Bout:
Brent Weedman (18-5-1) vs. Jay Hieron (20-4) – Jay Hieron
Probably the best fight “on paper” put these two MMA veterans against each other for a spot in the finals against Rick Hawn. Weedman is coming off a tough and razor thin decision with over Dan Hornbuckle at bellator 35 while Hieron only was in the cage for under one round. Both fighters are well rounded and there doesn’t seem to be any clear holes or advantages. Hieron does train at Extreme Couture which typically arms their fighters with a solid game plan but this fight these fight is pretty even.
Season 4 Lightweight Tournament Semifinal Bout:
Lloyd Woodard (11-0) vs. Michael Chandler (6-0) – Lloyd Woodard
With Patricky Freire already in the lightweight final after defeating Toby Imada at Bellator 39, he now sits waiting to see who his opponent will be. Lloyd Woodard and Michael Chandler are two undefeated lightweight prospects, looking to earn a shot in the finals against Patricky Freire Chandler has a background in wrestling and will look to take Woodard down to avoid the quick and powerful strikes of Woodard. With only two decisions among their 17 bouts this fight should provide ample fireworks for the fans and stay clear of the judges.
Undercard (non televised):
Nate James (11-6-1) vs. Tyler Stinson (19-7) – Tyler Stinson
Josh Burns (5-3) vs. Eric Prindle (6-1) – Eric Prindle
David Rickles (4-0) vs. Dylan Smith (7-1) – David Rickles
Cody Carrillo (6-4) vs. Michael Osborn (2-3) – Cody Carrillo
