Joe Warren and Patricio Freire set for Bellator 47
The Bellator featherweight champion and self-proclaimed “baddest man on the planet” Joe Warren will be back in action on July 23rd. His opponent at Bellator 47 will be the season 4 featherweight tournament champ Patricio Freire, who lost to Warren in the season 2 tournament final.
Freire (17-1) defeated Daniel Straus in the finals at last weeks Bellator 45 via unanimous decision to earn his rematch with Warren. The Brazilian looked impressive in the tournament knocking out his first two opponents before facing Straus.
After winning the season 2 featherweight tournament, Warren (7-1) went onto defeat Joe Soto who was the featherweight champion at the time. Warren has only fought once since winning the title at Bellator 27 and also plans on fighting in the season 5 bantamweight tournament set to begin in September.
When these two meet at Bellator 23 it looked as if Freire was going to make short work of the Greco-Roman wrestler, dropping him in the first round. Warren always seems to start out slow survived the round and came back strong in rounds two and three with takedowns and ground and pound. The judges gave Warren the nod via a split decision, handing Freire his first career loss.
Warren will be a very busy fighter as he’ll be defending his title at Bellator 47 plus fighting in the season 5 bantamweight tournament all while training for the 2012 Olympics. Not to mention Bellator will also be conducting another featherweight tournament during its Summer Series, potentially lining up another opponent for Warren, should he get past Freire in July.
