Guida vs. Pettis: Major Championship Implications

| June 3, 2011 | Reply

Penn moved back up. Florian moved down. Yet the UFC Lightweight division is still just as stacked. There is just one major fight at 155 this month that has Championship Implications written all over it. That fight in said division goes down live tomorrow night serving as the Headliner for this season’s TUF Finale live on Spike TV and its a doozy.

Clay “The Carpenter” Guida could finally get his shot at 12 pounds of gold should he defeat the final WEC Lightweight Champion in Anthony Pettis. When the man they call “Showtime” sealed a date with the winner of Edgar vs. Maynard for that title late last year it seemed almost to good to be true. If Pettis can get by Guida this weekend he may get that shot if Edgar and Maynard can ever settle their score. Or he could have to fight the winner of Jim Miller vs. Ben Henderson, a fight that will be part of the UFC Live card in Milwaukee in mid August. Who wouldn’t want to see a rematch of the instant classic between Bendo and Showtime that closed out the WEC era?

We could play matchmaker and talk about the future of this division all day if we wanted. The reality though is that right now we are seeing some historic matches that will forever have an imprint on arguably the most exciting division in the sports timeline. We learned how dangerous the tireless Guida can be after we watched him enforce a game plan under Coach Jackson when he submitted Gomi earlier this year. We know Pettis is as unpredictable a striker as they come under the guidance of Duke Roufus. Will Saturday Night deliver us another Nightmare vs. Clayesque performance? Or will this be one of those showdowns that just looked good on paper? Guida vs. Pettis. Jackson vs. Roufus. The Carpenter vs. Showtime. Championship Implications!
