John Howard vs. Matt Brown Breakdown
One of Sundays best matchups on Paper would have to be Matt Brown (11-10) and John Howard (14-6) welterweight match-up. Both fighters have shown grit and have been able to overcome adversity, making some of the best fights and finishes from modern-day UFC highlight reel.
Brown is coming off three straight 2nd round submission losses, but before that he was on a tear through the lower half of the division destroying guys like Pete Sell and James Wilks. Howard also a slow starter is coming off two loses to guys at the very top of the division, Alves and Ellenberger. He was making a comeback in the third round but appeared to have a broken orbital bone from ground and pound that he could not seem to stop early in the fight. Both fighters have decent ground game but prefer to keep it on the feet and decide things from there, and gut feeling says this is exactly what the fight will be about on Sunday night.
Keys to the Fight: In order for Brown to stay in the UFC he’s going to put on another fight of his life and start from the very first bell. A quick takedown would surprise Howard and even if he gets up fast might throw a wrench in his timing or amount of strikes thrown. Brown also has nice kicks which could prove to be the best weapon in his bag. If Brown comes out swinging and forces Howard to counter, Brown is going to wear away at Howard and should win a very late fight stoppage or close decision.
Howard will need to control the ring cornering Brown or catch him rushing in with his speed. Howard is a devastating striker and one early shot can very well put Brown to sleep. As long as Howard is in his zone and comfortable striking it will be a bad night for Brown. Betting favorite should be Howard in this match and its understandable why. Don’t walk away from this fight to grab a beer, because it’s going to be an all out striking battle, you know the kind the trolls beg for.
