Emanuel Newton Slams his way to Victory at Shark Fights 18
One of the biggest crowd pleaser’s in Mixed Martial Arts is the slam, seeing someone lifted up off the canvas and thrown down just makes the fans go crazy. Fans of the slam were treated to a clinic by former Maximum Fighting Champion light heavyweight champion Emanuel Newton during Fridays Shark Fights 18 co-main event.
Newton (16-6-1) took on the 6’-6 tall Anchorage, Alaska fighter Ricky Shivers (10-6-1), winning a unanimous decision (30-27 across the board). From the opening bell Newton took the center off the cage and once the two clinched, Newton picked up Shivers and slammed him down hard. This would become a recurring theme for the fighters as Shivers would be slammed twice in the first, four times in the second and one more time on the third. Seven slams in total for a completely dominating performance that gave Newton his fourth consecutive win.
Shivers only real offense in the fight was submission attempts from the bottom and the loss snapped his three fight winning streak.
Besides the powerful slams, Newton showed the work he’s been putting in at Reign MMA with Robert Drimil on his standup. His kicks were thumping and his striking crisp, couple that with the strong wrestling he’s always had, makes Newton a serious force in the light heavyweight division.
With the dominate performance and a nice winning streak going, Newton should have several options for his next fight. Possibly a third consecutive fight with Shark Fights, maybe against the man who took Newton’s MFC belt Trevor Prangley who happens to be the Shark fights 205 lbs champ. A return to Maximum Fighting Championship is also a strong possibility for Newton’s next bout. Both Bellator and Strikeforce could also use another light heavyweight on their roster and let’s not rule out the UFC as a possibility either.
After losing his title in May of 2009 and losing three in a row, Newton has worked very hard to evolve both in and outside of the cage and is now once again streaking towards the top.
