One fight at a time for Strikeforce Challengers Headliner Lorenz Larkin
The Strikeforce Challengers series has long been dubbed the Strikeforce minor leagues, a showcase of the most exciting up and coming fighters in the sport according Strikeforce. Fighters work their way up the Challengers ladder and once they reach the top rung, it’s onto the Strikeforce big cards.
Lorenz Larkin (11-0) is a perfect example of this process. At 2-0 in Strikeforce Challengers he now finds himself in the September 23rd Challengers main event against the heavy-handed Virgil Zwicker. If history were to repeat itself, the winner of this main event would find themselves on an upcoming Strikeforce card.
But “The Monsoon” says not so fast though, “I am not looking to make a big jump but just take it one fight at a time and see where it goes, I won’t know that till the end of this fight and me and my team will evaluate my performance and take it from there,” explained Larkin.
Larkin burst on the scene in April of 2011 on the Strikeforce Challengers: Wilcox vs. Damm card, dominating the K1 veteran Scott Lighty for a second round TKO victory. He followed that up with a unanimous decision win two months later against Gian Villante and his stock was now skyrocketing. Thing is Larkin has only been fighting professionally in Mixed Martial Arts since the middle of 2009 (just over two years) and at only 25 years of age, there is now need to rush.
Larkin is squarely focused at the task at hand, Virgil “Rezdog” Zwicker and knows it would be a mistake to look past the dangerous opponent. “He (Zwicker) is a good striker; he comes from a good camp with Team Quest, This guy is no slouch and will be a very tough opponent,” described Larkin.
The Challengers main event will pit Larkin and his self-described “Kung Fu” fighting style against Zwicker’s heavy handed striking for want should be one of the more exciting headliners in the series history. “I don’t see myself standing in front of him and banging with him but we are going to let em go I am sure,” Said Larkin.
Tune in Friday September 23rd on Showtime for Strikeforce Challengers series 19 as “The Monsoon” and the “Rezdog” square off in the night main event.
