Alistair Overeem Signed, Will Face Brock Lesnar on Dec. 30th

No this is not a Dream MMA fans, the former Strikeforce and DREAM heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem will face the former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. News of this mega fight was announced on LA Times and was quickly confirmed by Dana White, via twitter.

Overeem (35-11, 1NC) was released from Strikeforce back in July along with most of the Golden Glory fighters under ZUFFA owned contracts. A month and a half later though Overeem is now under contract with the UFC and is schedule to make is long-awaited promotional debut on December 30th in Las Vegas. Overeem’s Strikeforce title will not be on the line and now signed to an exclusive UFC contract he will also not be defending his DREAM heavyweight title or the K-1 world Grand Prix championship either.

Lesnar (5-2) hasn’t stepped foot in the Octagon since losing his title to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 in October of last year. Lesnar was a coach on the 13th season of The Ultimate Fighter, alongside Junior Dos Santos and the two were scheduled to fight after the reality series concluded. Unfortunately Lesnar’s had another bout of Diverticulitis and on May 27th he underwent surgery to remove a 12-inch piece of his colon. When Lesnar faces Overeem he will have been out of action for just over 14 months.

Also announced is that the winner of this heavyweight clash will be named the number one contender and be set to face the winner of the Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos title fight happening when the UFC debuts on FOX, November 12th.

What a way to close out the incredible year the UFC has had in 2011.
