MMA Fighter Rankings for October 2011
Things ramped up in the world of Mixed Martial Arts in September. Along with two UFC events, Bellator kicked off its fifth season with three events, Strikeforce held two and BAMMA had one. The action will continue at this feverish pace until the calendar turns over a new year.
The biggest drop in the ranks was by Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza who lost his Strikeforce Middleweight title to Luke Rockhold by unanimous decision. Souza had been ranked #2 in the division but the defeat saw him fall completely out of the top 5. For Rockhold, the win was huge for his career and someday he might land in the top 5, but not just yet.
Two losses in a row by the former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields found him also out of the top 5, with a long climb back up the ranks. The shakeup allowed the former WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit to enter the ranks for the first time. Condit will be fighting for the welterweight title at UFC 137 after Nick Diaz was removed from the bout.
October has three title fights on the line that will surely change the look of the ranks next month. Many of the fighters “knocking on the door” will be in action this month and a big win from them could potentially move them up the ranks.
