Maxim Grishin steps in for Injured Guram Gugenishvili at M-1 Challenge 27
Reigning M-1 Global heavyweight champion and prospect, Guram Gugenishvili has suffered a training injury to his elbow and arm, forcing him to withdraw from his title defense at M-1 Challenge 27 on October 14th. Maxim Grishin (11-5) has stepped up to face Kenny Garner (7-3) in the night’s main event which has been made an Interim Title bout.
During wrestling drill Wednesday evening, Gugenishvili landed badly on his elbow while training with a sparring partner at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. Preliminary tests today resulted in him not being cleared to fight. Guram is expected to be sidelined for at least 4 to 6 weeks, and might not be able to return to the ring for 3-5 month in order to fully recover. Company officials stated that they are optimistic that Gugenishvili would be able to defend his title and make his stateside debut later this year.
“This is tremendously unfortunate, as it is now the second time this has happened. No one is more disappointed about the change in circumstances than Guram himself; He was absolutely gutted when breaking the news to us,” said M-1 Global Director of Operations, Evgeni Kogan.
In the night’s co-main event, M-1 Global Light Heavyweight Champion and ADCC Submission Wrestling World Champion Vinny Magalhaes (8-5) will make his first title defense against versatile Russian fighter Mikhail Zayats (14-5).
M-1 Challenge 27: Garner vs Grishin will feature bouts from the new 5,500 seat Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix, Arizona will air live on SHOWTIME on Friday, October 14 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (Delayed on the West Coast).
