Bay Brawlers holds Eventful first Show in Bay Area
The bay area is a hot bed for Mixed Martial Arts, its home to such gyms as American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose and El Nino Training Center in San Francisco. These gyms have produced many current and former champions in the UFC and Strikeforce and have several up and coming prospects looking to following their footsteps. On Saturday those amateurs had a new place they could call home, Bay Brawlers.
Bay Brawlers is a brand new amateur only MMA promotion with the goal of providing Northern California fighters a platform to showcase their skills on their journey to becoming professional fighters.
The inaugural event, October Slugfest Chapter 1 was held at the Oakland Marriott Convention Center in Oakland, California Saturday with ZUFFA fighters Anthony Johnson, Gilbert Melendez and Jake Shields in attendance. The nine fight card was headlined by a pair of title fights featuring the Porter twins (Jared & Jordan) out of the Crispim BJJ Barra Brothers gym in Pleasanton, California.
Being the promotions first event they did a really good job overall, but you knew there would be some hitches……
The good: All the fights were very competitive with some very solid talent on display; keep your eyes out for some of these fighters. The knowledgeable crowd in attendance was loud and supported “their” fighters exceptionally well throughout the night.
The Bad: The event started 45 minutes late and when it did start there was too much down time between the fights. Seating for the media, photographers, VIP’s and the CSAC was unorganized and quickly became a matter of everyone fending for themselves.
The Ugly: Inside the cage the ugliest thing on the night were the two occasions where a fighters’ cup fell out onto the canvas during the fight. Unfortunately outside of the cage there was but there was something much uglier. During the co-main event a few drunken fans decided to have “words” with each other, instead of watching the fight they paid for. By the time the fight (in the cage) had ended security had ineptly let things escalate between the drunks into a full on brawl that prompted the ring announcer to tell the 25 security guards on duty how to properly do their jobs.
They say that the first time is always the hardest and while they had their rough patches, overall the night was a success. Just like the fighter you learn and come back stronger the next time, which by the way will at the start of 2012.
