Despite the champ not wanting it, Silva vs. Sonnen will happen
When Anderson Silva defeated Yushin Okami at UFC 134 in August the question immediately became, who does the spider fight next? There wasn’t a fighter waiting in the wings for the champion and the potential opponents in the division were all scheduled to fight in the coming months.
Two months later, Chael Sonnen threw his name into the mix by calling out the Spider in WWE fashion after a submission win over Brian Stann at UFC 136. It was the first trip back into the Octagon since coming up just 110 seconds short against the champ 14 months earlier in August of 2010.
All signs pointed to the rivals squaring off super bowl weekend, but in the days following the event those signs dimmed. While Sonnen obviously wants the fight, the champion appears to have no real desire to step into the Octagon with Sonnen again.
Appearing on the Jim Rome show today, Dana White was asked if Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen would in fact happen.
“It’s the fight everyone wants to see. People want to see Chael vs. Anderson. Anderson is in this position where he feels like this guys is so disrespectful he doesn’t want to give him a shot, but Anderson will end up fighting Chael Sonnen, the answer is YES,” explained White.
Now White doesn’t say when the fight will happen nor does he say if Sonnen will actually be the next opponent for Silva, but we do now the fight will happen….. Eventually!
