With his UFC Career in Jeopardy, Wanderlei Silva Just Needs to Stay Awake to Salvage It
If legendary PRIDE superstar Wanderlei Silva wants to continue fighting for the UFC he needs to stay awake inside of the Octagon this Saturday Night. His UFC career has been a combination of impressive hard-fought decision losses (vs. Liddell, Franklin) and 1st Round knockout losses (Rampage, Leben) with a win or two sprinkled in between (Jardine, Bisping). Although the 36 second highlight reel knockout of Jardine may be the one victory he’s most remembered for during his latest UFC but the most impressive might be his cool and calculated decision victory over Michael Bisping in OZ last February.
The years have not been kind to Wanderlei’s chin. He’s been through plenty more wars than even his 46 MMA fight career could explain. The guys that have put him down in recent years could put down anybody when they are fresh and it’s been Wand’s reckless abandonment approach that gets him into trouble. When you look at his 3-6 UFC record you could easily flip one if not both of those close UD losses against Liddell and Franklin.
Wanderlei’s opponent will be fighting in his 9th pro MMA fight come UFC 139. It’s no coincidence that it’ll be his 9th in San Jose. The crowd will be full of Cung Faithful for his UFC debut (which is also the promotions San Jose debut). When Wanderlei Silva enters the cage for what very well could be his last fight in the UFC this weekend it’ll be interesting to see the crowds reaction.
