Stephen Bonnar reminds everyone of his grappling game at UFC 139

When you think of the Stephen Bonnar inside the Octagon, the first thing that comes to mind is his epic brawl with Forrest Griffin at the Ultimate Fighter season 1 finale. With countless bloody brawls among his 14 career UFC fights, it’s hard not to think of him as a brawler.

Bonnar (14-7 MMA, 8-6 UFC) does play the part of the brawler very well, but “The American Psycho” has a very good grappling game with the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt to show for it. In fact before entering the TUF 1 house Bonnar was 6-1 with five of those wins coming by way of submission. The Brawling style of Bonnar didn’t show itself tell that historic night inside the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas on April 9th, 2005.

Opening the PPV card at last night’s UFC 139 against Kyle Kingsbury from San Jose, California, the fight had all the makings of another brawl. While it started out looking that way until Bonnar got the fight to the ground and the brawler reverted back to the grappler.

Once on the ground, Bonnar began fishing for submissions and found himself in complete control of the San Jose based fighter. Amongst the occasional chores of boos from the fans, Bonnar would continue what was working the entire fight. Kingsbury would hang tough and defended every submission attempt thrown at him but would end up spending the majority of the fight on his back.

Not used to being boo’d Bonnar was quick to apologize for his unanimous decision victory, even though it wasn’t warranted.

The dominate performance extended the winning streak to three for Bonnar, who reportedly would like to fight against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson next. Whoever is next for “The American Psycho” will not only have to prepare for a toe to toe brawl but a ground game that could have you tapping at any moment.
