Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis to headline UFC on FOX 2
Light heavyweights Rashad Evans and Phil Davis were supposed to fight on August 6th at UFC 133, but an injury to Davis nixed the main event. The two now appear set to headline the UFC on FOX 2 card scheduled for January 28th in Chicago, Illinois.
News of the fight was announced by ESPN late last night.
Evans (16-1-1) ended up facing Tito Ortiz in the main event at UFC 133, defeating the former champion in the second round with a brutal knee to the chest. A former champion himself, “suga” was expected to face his former teammate and current 205 lbs. title holder Jon Jones untila lingering hand injury forced his withdraw. Jones now scheduled face Lyoto Machida in the main event of December’s UFC 140.
Davis (9-0 MMA) hasn’t fought since March of 2011 when he won his fifth UFC bout by defeating Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by unanimous decision. The four-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler also holds UFC wins over Tom Boetsch, Rodney Wallace, Alexander Gustafsson and Brian Stann on his resume.
Evans has been the #1 contender at light heavyweight for a very long time now, but timing issues and injuries to both have kept the two from fighting. Now with Dan Henderson waiting in the wings after his epic win at UFC 139, even with a win from both (Jones & Evans) there’s no guarantee’s they would face off next.
