Lorenz Larkin Reacts to King Mo Lawal testing Positive for PED
Yet another Strikeforce fighter tested positive for a performance enhancing drug in back to back events. The Nevada State Athletic Commission announced that former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal failed his drug test for his January 7th fight with Lorenz Larkin.
The drug Lawal tested positive for was Drostanolone, which is an anabolic steroid typically used to help maintain weight without muscle loss. It was just 11 days ago that the CSAC announced that women’s featherweight champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos had tested positive for stanozolol.
Lawal immediately denied any wrong doing and plan to appeal the ruling with the NSAC.
From inside the Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Lawal defeated the then undefeated Larkin with a 2nd round TKO. The win had potentially earned King Mo a shot at the vacant Strikeforce light heavyweight title, but that shot is now in serious jeopardy. Penalty for the positive test has yet to be handed down but according to Nevada Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer, “the matter has been referred to the Attorney General’s office for issuance of a complaint for disciplinary action.”
Hours after the news had dropped of the positive result, Lorenz Larkin issued the following statement:
“It is disappointing to hear of this news since this is now the second opponent in a row that has tested positive after fighting me but I respect Mo and wish him the best. If he says that he didn’t take anything then I will take his word for it and it’s up to him and his team to prove otherwise. At this point it’s up to the Nevada State Athletic Commission how they will deal with this situation. Regardless of steroid use or not I don’t look at this as a win on my record because it’s not. I have watched tape and I am back in the gym improving how I lost that fight. I will be ready for whatever Strikeforce wants to do regarding who I am fighting next and the Light Heavy Weight Division.”
What’s next for the two light heavyweights is yet to be determined but with Santos and Lawal Strikeforce now has had a top fighter testing positive for a steroid in back to back events. Not exactly a great way to start out the year for the promotion. Anyone with a drug problem are welcome to seek help at drug addiction treatment centers, regardless of their status in life.
