Delay of Georges St. Pierre vs. Nick Diaz Bout Adding Fuel to the Fire

Fans have been dying to see UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre fight former Strikeforce 170 pound title holder Nick Diaz, ever since the announcement that they would be fighting in October of last year. You all know the story; Diaz missed a couple of key press conferences to promote the bout and was subsequently replaced by former WEC welterweight king Carlos Condit. St. Pierre then would withdraw from the Condit bout due to a knee injury and Diaz went on to fight BJ Penn in a fight that was elevated into the main event slot at UFC 137.

Diaz went on to put on a striking clinic in his contest with Penn, and although BJ hung tough, he was ultimately outclassed by the unofficial bad boy of MMA. Now that GSP has removed himself from action to rehabilitate his injured knee, Diaz and Condit have been matched up to battle it out for the interim UFC welterweight championship at UFC 143. Regardless of who ends up winning the Diaz/Condit fight, fans have not let go of the notion that GSP and Diaz need to fight.

Dana White recently spoke to Ariel Helwani after the UFC on FX 1 event, and had these words to say about the Diaz/GSP feud that seems to be producing more steam as the day’s progress.

“GSP’s rehab could not be going better. He was texting me pictures of him kicking, doing everything. I think he’s going to be back sooner than doctors anticipated.”

“I am praying every night when I go to bed that Nick Diaz wins the fight against Condit. I have never seen Georges St. Pierre hate somebody. He hates Nick Diaz. I’ve never seen him so motivated to fight somebody and to beat somebody like Nick Diaz.”

Let’s just hope that St. Pierre’s recovery is expedient, so the UFC can make this bout happen sooner rather than later. Whether Diaz wins the title or not, this is the fight that the fans want to see, and could be the biggest fight of 2012, whenever it goes down.
