Ryan McGillivray and Nathan Coy Secure MFC welterweight title shot at MFC 32

Between Wilson Gouveia upsetting Dwayne Lewis and Antonio McKee’s missed weight debacle, the search for the next MFC welterweight champion got lost in the shuffle. Inside the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta and live on HDNet, MFC 32: Bitter Rivals featured two bouts that would determine who’d fight for the vacant welterweight title later this year.

Ultimate Fighter 13 quarterfinalist Ryan McGillivray returned to Canada and the Maximum Fighting Championship after losing his lone fight in the UFC. McGillivray took on the undefeated Diego Bautista and had his trouble early, suffering a gash on his forehead in the second round that was spewing blood all over the canvas. The more experienced McGillivray stayed composed and would lock on his favored submission, the armbar, to end the fight in the third and final round. The win earned him the Submission of the Night honor, plus a fight against the winner of the Dhiego Lima vs. Nathan Coy bout.

Dhiego Lima went into the bout with Nathan Coy as the favorite but it didn’t take long to see that Coy had other ideas. Using both his wrestling to score seven takedowns and accurate striking when standing, Coy rolled to a unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, and 29-28) victory over the prospect Lima. Overshadowed by Lima coming into the bout Coy earned the title shot with a clear-cut victory and handed Lima his first career defeat.

The two now have a shot at gold and baring any injuries the two will fight for the vacant MFC at MFC 33: Collision Course set for May 4.
