If the Fans want it, Forrest Griffin would Fight Tito Ortiz Again
Mixed Martial Arts legend and former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz appears ready to hang them up. Having just one fight remaining on his current contract Ortiz has requested to end his career with a third bout against either Chuck Liddell or Forrest Griffin in July. Since the “Iceman” has already retired, that just leaves Ortiz with a rubber match against Griffin.
The two fan favorites literally split their previous bouts with both fights going the distance. Ortiz won the first meeting at UFC 59 by a razor thing split decision, but three and a half years later Griffin would even the score with his own split decision at UFC 106. The two fights were obviously very close and both thought they had done enough to earn the judge’s decision, so a third fight between the two isn’t entirely farfetched.
Ortiz is coming off back to back losses after shocking Ryan Bader with a first round submission at UFC 132 to save his UFC career. He last fought at UFC 140 where he lost to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira via body punches in the opening round. Griffin is also coming off a recent defeat, losing his rematch with Mauricio Rua at UFC 134 by first round knockout. Griffin had won the previous two bouts and is just five fights removed from his one and only title defense, would another bout with Ortiz even interest him?
In a recent interview with MMA Fight Corner, Griffin sounds interested in the bout, claiming he thinks it’s a good fight for him, but the fans must want it. “Do people want to see it?” asked the former light heavyweight champion, “if people pay to see the fight, I’ll get paid to fight that fight.”
So it would seem this retirement fight Ortiz wishes all depends on you, the fans. Seems fitting since the July 7th UFC event is supposed to coincide with the UFC Fan EXPO’s return to Las Vegas.
So fans, what say you?
