The Juggernaut could move one step close to Title Shot at UFC on Fuel TV
Jake Ellenberger’s UFC debut didn’t go as planned, dropping a razor close decision to current Interim Welterweight Champion, Carlos Condit at UFC Fight Night: Diaz vs Guillard. Fast Forward five fights later and Ellenberger finds himself knocking on the door of a potential shot at the Welterweight championship.
Ellenberger will step back into the cage at UFC on Fuel TV when he takes on former Lightweight contender Diego Sanchez in the nights main event. UFC on Fuel is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15th and will the first event for the UFC on Fuel, not counting the prelims.
The Juggernaut (26-5, 5-1 UFC) has cemented himself as one of the top fighters in the welterweight division after a dominating performance over one time Strikeforce Middleweight and EliteXC welterweight champion, Jake Shields. Ellenberger became only the 2nd fighter to stop Shields, dropping him with a devastating knee and finishing up with punches, all while earning Knockout of the Night honors in the Main event.
The former D-2 wrestler out of The University of Nebraska-Omaha had seen his fair share of MMA fights before getting his call up to the UFC, going 21-4 in various promotions including a stay with the IFL and a fight with Bellator before making his way into the UFC.
Splitting his time at Kings MMA and Reign MMA, where he trains with Mark Munoz, Ellenberger has blasted his way through his last five fights, taking out Mike Pyle, John Howard, Sean Pierson, and a close fight with Carlos Eduardo Rocha.
Ellenberger, who was also an Assistant wrestling coach at Nebraska-Omaha and a former United States Marine, has showcased his power to MMA fans, winning 17 out of his 26 fights via KO/TKO, including knocking out MMA legend Jose “Pele” Landi in just 9 seconds, 2 years into his professional career.
At only 27 years old, Ellenberger is one of the more seasoned fighters on the UFC roster with a total of 31 fights in his 7 years as a professional. The BJJ Purple Belt under Rickson Gracie Black Belt Rodrigo Vaghi, a level he reached prior the Shields fight, has only been stopped once in his 31 fights, losing via submission to BJJ World Champion Delson Heleno in the IFL.
With a win, Ellenberger will cement himself as one of the top in the Welterweight division and could be knocking on the door of a future title shot.
