Five is not a charm for Steve Cantwell at UFC 144
The days might be numbered for the former WEC light heavyweight Steve Cantwell inside the Octagon after another unanimous decision loss. Cantwell faced Riki Fukuda on the preliminary card of tonight’s UFC 144: Japan and walked out of the Octagon with his fifth consecutive decision loss.
“The Robot” looked good in round one but quickly began to gas as the fight entered the second round and Fukuda took over. It’s a familiar act for Cantwell as the same thing happened to him against Mike Massenzio in his last fight at UFC 136.
Cantwell made a big splash in the WEC but just hasn’t been able to achieve the same success in the UFC. With the win, Fukuda earned his first win in the UFC and improved his overall record to 18-5.
Cantwell’s UFC record fell to a dismal 1-5, having not had his hand raised in victory since December of 2008 when he defeated Razak Al-Hassan. Most fighters in the UFC don’t even make it past three losses in a row and losing five in a row can only mean one thing for Cantwell, time to rebuild outside the big lights of the UFC.
