A new Champion is Crowned at Bellator 60
The main event of last night’s Bellator 60 was a long-awaited featherweight title fight between Joe Warren and Pat Curran. The bout capped off the first event of Bellator’s sixth season, which also featured the opening round of a brand new featherweight tournament. The main card was all about the featherweights, showcasing arguably the promotions best division.
The Champion, Joe Warren came into his first featherweight title defense trying to recover from a brutal knockout suffered in the quarterfinal round of last season’s bantamweight tournament. It was only his second career defeat and the first time he’d been knocked out. Pat Curran came in on a three fight winning streak, having won the summer series featherweight tournament. The tournament win was Curran’s second as he also won the season two lightweight tournament, going on to lose a decision to then champion, Eddie Alvarez.
Warren started quick, ducking in for takedowns as Curran methodically stalked. The high level Greco-roman wrestler was able to take down the challenger multiple times but could never hold him there long enough to land a single punch. On their feet Curran was landing some heavy shots and scoring but not pressing the action. That would all change though in the third round when Curran hurt the champ bad with a knee to the temple, sending him backwards against the cage. As if a switch was flipped Curran turned it on with a flurry that hard the champ completely out on his feet, taking way more damage then he should have.
Pat Curran was the new Bellator featherweight champion and Joe Warren was knocked out again. As Curran’s hand was being raised and the gold belt being placed around his waist, two obvious points were there glaring everyone in the face. 1) Warren can take a freaking punch, but the problem is he takes so many of them and 2) Bellator has brought up the best in the newly crowned champion, Pat Curran.
The featherweight tournament saw two tournament veterans in Marlon Sandro and Daniel Straus advance to the semifinals along with Mike Corey and Alexandre Bezerra.
Curran will not have to wait for this tournament to end for his next challenge though; already waiting for him is Patricio Freire who won the season four tournament. Freire was schedule to fight Warren before Curran but a broken hand switched up the order and the two will now likely meet towards the end of the current season.
