UFC 146 adds yet another Heavyweight bout with Mark Hunt vs. Stefan Struve
The May UFC 146 fight card will offer up an experience unlike any other the worlds biggest Mixed Martial Arts promotion has every done, an all heavyweight main card. Following past announcements of four other heavyweight bouts for the May 26th card, the UFC today added a fight between Mark Hunt and Stefan Struve and confirmed that for the first time in UFC history, all five main card bouts will be heavyweight fights.
The UFC 146 card will be headlined be the heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos making his first title defense against the former Strikeforce and Dream champion, Alistair Overeem. The Hunt vs. Struve bout will serve as the opening bout for the main card, kicking off the run of five heavyweights tilts in a row.
Hunt (8-7) is coming off a first round TKO win over Cheick Kongo and UFC 144 and has won three in a row after dropping his UFC debut against Sean McCorkle at UFC 119. The streaking former K-1 star looked extremely confident in his last bout and even requested a shot at the title.
Struve (23-5) recently defeated Dave Herman at UFC on Fuel TV: Sanchez vs. Ellenberger where he displayed a much improved striking attack to win by second round TKO. The tallest heavyweight (6’-11) is 7-3 inside the Octagon and has shown that he’s a finisher, having only going the distance once in his career.
While Hunt has shown to have a weakness of the ground, he has hands that can turn out the lights at any moment. Conversely Struve has a chin that’s come into the questions while in the UFC, but has three submission wins in the UFC and 15 overall. Each of the fighter’s strengths will play into the others weakness meaning the first to make a mistake is likely going to find themselves on the losing end.
UFC 146 takes place on May 26th from the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada and will also feature a co-main event between Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez, as well as Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Shane del Rosario and Roy Nelson vs. Antonio Silva.
