Marcos Galvao and Luis Nogueira Advance to Bantamweight semifinals at Bellator 65
The second half of the Bellator season six bantamweight quarterfinal round was concluded during tonight’s Bellator 65 event. Live from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey Marcos Galvao, Ed West, Alexis Vila and Luis Nogueira looked to join Travis Marx and Hiroshi Nakamura, who advanced to the semifinals at last week’s Bellator 64.
Marcos Galvao and Ed West were first to enter the Bellator cage and both started out quickly. West moved in and out throwing leg kicks but it was Galvao that was surprisingly aggressive. Having lost his first two Bellator bouts by very controversial split decisions, it was clear Galvao didn’t want to leave it to the judges again. The very tough West found himself on his back numerous times but Galvao was unable to put him away. The fight would end up going to the judges but there was little doubt who won the fight, as the scores were read it was Galvao earning the Unanimous Decision winning all three rounds across the board.
Looking to grab the final spot in the semifinals, Alexis Vila and Luis Nogueira also battled it out for 15 minutes. Nogueria came out in the opening round and actual took down the Olympic Judo Bronze medalist Vila in route to capturing the round. Vila took over in round two landing good strikes and pushing the pass to even the fight at one round a piece. The final round was the closest of the three but Nogueria used head movement and quick foot work to stay on the outside and pepper his opponent with leather. Both fights thought they had done enough to win but in the end the judges gave it to Nogueria, two rounds to one across the board for the Unanimous Decision.
The Bellator bantamweight tournament now moves to the semifinal round as Marcos Galvao and Luis Nogueira join Travis Marx and Hiroshi Nakamura.
