Hector Lombard Signs with UFC, Vacates Bellator Title
Hector Lombard and his 25 fight unbeaten streak are leaving Bellator Fighting Championship for the big stage of the UFC. The Cuban-Australian middleweight announced the news via Twitter but the news hasn’t been officially announced by the UFC.
Hector Lombard (31-2-1) went 8-0 with Bellator, which included becoming the promotions first middleweight tournament champion and its only middleweight champion. When Lombard’s Bellator contract expired the promotion still held the opportunity to match any offer he decided to accept. According to Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney, Lombard received a sizable deal from the UFC and the promotion had declined to match it.
With the current Bellator middleweight champion now leaving the promotion, the belt will now become vacant. Rebney tweeted out today that the winner of this season’s middleweight final between Maiquel Falcao and Andreas Spang would face last season’s tournament winner, Alexander Shlemenko for the World title later this fall.
Lombard hasn’t lost a fight since November of 2006 when Gegard Mousasi topped him via unanimous decision. The 34-year-old will be joining a deep UFC middleweight division, currently owned by Anderson Silva and his impressive 15 fight winning streak. The division holds many intriguing possible matchups for Lombard, along with a great place to prove his skills and justify that lengthy streak.
