The UFC returns to the HP Pavilion on July 11th
After one of last year’s “fights of the year” took place at UFC 139 in San Jose, California, the UFC will be making a return appearance to the HP Pavilion on July 11th. The former home of Strikeforce will host the UFC on FUEL TV 4 event, headlined by a middleweight fight between Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman.
The HP Pavilion is hold to the San Jose Sharks hockey team but was also the long time home of the now ZUFFA owned Strikeforce promotion. The arena can hold as much as 18,000 people but Strikeforce would routinely draw nearly 10,000 fans and the UFC brought in almost 14,000 fans for UFC 139.
Munoz (12-2) is riding a four fight winning streak and returning to action from an injury that forced out of a schedule bout against Chael Sonnen in January. Since moving down to the middleweight division, Munoz has gone 7-1, with notable wins over Aaron Simpson, Demian Maia and Chris Leben.
Weidman (8-0) is coming off a win against Demian Maia as a late replacement to the UFC on FOX card that Munoz withdrew from. Like his opponent, Weidman has a wrestling background but with more of a submission grappling style.
The card is still taking shape but two other bouts have been linked to this card.
Light heavyweights Brandon Vera and James Te Huna are expected to face each other as well as lightweights Anthony Njokuani and Paul Taylor.
