Jessica Aguilar and Megumi Fujii put WMMA Spotlight on Bellator

| May 16, 2012 | Reply

When we think of American Women’s Mixed Martial Arts, usually it’s because Strikeforce has a big clash set up.  Be it Carano/Cyborg or Rousey/Tate, Strikeforce has been the home of WMMA of late.  However, Bellator has a fight this Friday night that is very intriguing to the Women’s MMA scene.  Jessica Aguilar faces off with Japanese legend, Megumi Fujii.

Friday night two fantastic athletes will square off in what should be a fantastic fight.  With a combined record of 38-5, the two represent excellence inside the cage, and as such should be a must see contest.  Japanese juggernaut Megumi Fujii has lost only once in her storied career, a split decision loss to Zoila Gurgel, which was heavily thought to be unjust.  So besides a bunk decision against her, Fujii is perfect, and her fight against Jessica Aguilar will be a test to remain so.

Speaking of Jessica Aguilar, she too fell victim to the mysterious bad decision gnome that Gurgel seems to keep nearby.  Jessica is 13-4 and is on a four fight winning streak, nine if you discount her questionable loss to Gurgel.  She’s a very skilled fighter and has found success in Bellator, but this is far and away her biggest fight to date.

Aguilar will likely try to keep the fight standing, trying to outbox her opponent.  Eventually the fight will hit the ground, and that’s where Jessica needs to be careful.  Her outstanding submissions notwithstanding, she’s up against it when it comes to Fujii and her submission game.   It should be a classic battle on the mat, which would be well worth the price of admission.

The world of WMMA is widely viewed as less than stellar, creeping along between super-fights.  However the landscape of WMMA is beset with quality fights, sprinkled in different organizations, and this fight serves as an opportunity to see it on a national stage.

Bellator 69 airs on MTV2 on Friday night and provides an outstanding opportunity to see two of the best women in the sport when Jessica Aguilar and Megumi Fujii square off.
