Tomorrow’s Stars Today – Predicting the Future
This article is the first in a series of articles that will attempt to predict tomorrow’s superstars by highlighting an up and coming fighter on a card. This time we’re looking at Erick “Indio” Silva. He’s facing Charlie Brenneman at UFC on FX 3. It’s a huge fight for the Brazilian who has all the necessary tools to be a star in the UFC.
Erick Silva is a 27-year-old fighter from Brazil, who trains with Team Nogueira as well as at X-Gym. He holds black belts in Jiu Jitsu and Judo, plus he has a background in Muay Thai, and is very explosive. He entered the UFC and in his debut, he needed only 40 seconds to TKO his opponent Luis Ramos. Ramos was a replacement for injured Mike Swick. It was clear however that Silva was vicious.
In Silva’s second fight in the UFC he was supposed to welcome Siyar Bahadurzada to the UFC, but Siyar was injured and replaced by vet Carlo Prater. It only took moments for Silva to hurt Prater and in the follow-up he landed a few inadvertent shots to the back of Prater’s head. The fight was stopped 29 seconds in, and all evidence pointed towards Silva winning, but after some discussion, it was ruled a disqualification loss. He lost that fight in the same manner Jon Jones “lost” to Matt Hamill. In the long run, it won’t count against him.
With this, his third fight he is stepping it up against Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman. Brenneman has only lost twice in the UFC, and has wins over notable fighters such as Rick Story, Jason High and Daniel Roberts. He’s looking to make a name for himself as well, and he won’t be a pushover for Silva. Brenneman possesses some outstanding wrestling and can control fights with it. He’ll definitely want to take Silva down and control him from the top, because standing with Silva would be a mistake.
Silva isn’t just a puncher though, as stated he has black belts in Jiu Jitsu and Judo, making him a very dangerous man to try to smother utilizing wrestling. He has all the tools to take the fight wherever he wants, and one would think he’d be more than happy to stand and trade.
If Erick Silva were to knock out Brenneman in short order, he’ll rocket towards the top of the very crowded and confused Welterweight division. He is going to be a star, and I believe he will defeat Charlie Brenneman in the first round, and in doing so, get a shot in his next fight at a top five fighter.
In closing, it would not surprise me if this time next year, we’re talking about Erick Silva facing Nick Diaz, Carlos Condit or Martin Kampmann. He’s got all the talent in the world, and is nearly a lock to be the next big thing at Welterweight in the UFC.
