UFC 152 gets new Headliners
Originally it was thought that September’s UFC 152 would be headlined by a welterweight bout between B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald. The UFC though would put those rumors to rest this weekend as they announced two new bouts (including a title fight) that will be sitting atop the UFC 152 fight card at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.
The UFC 152 main event will be the first ever UFC flyweight title fight between Joseph Benavidez (16-2) and Demetrious Johnson (15-2-1). Benavidez defeated Yasuhiro Urushitani by TKO in March but after the scores were botched in the other flyweight tournament bout between Johnson and Ian McCall he was forced to wait. That wait is finally over though and history will be made on September 22nd as the UFC welcomes a new champion into the fold.
News of the Flyweight bout was first reported Joe Ferraro of Canada’s SportsNet and later confirmed by MMAJunkie.com.
The new UFC 152 co-main event will bring one fighter closer to a title shot in the middleweight division that has been dominated by Anderson Silva since “The Spider” knocked out Rich Franklin at UFC 64. Michael Bisping (22-4) will take on Brian Stann (12-4) as both fighters return to action after recent injuries forced them out of separate bouts. Bisping was set to face Tim Boetsch at UFC 149 but a knee injury put him on the shelf, while Stann was expected to headline the UFC on FOX 4 card against Hector Lombard. With the #2 and #3 middleweights in the world losing this past week thing are wide open for the next middleweight challenger and these two men believe a win earn them that title shot.
Penn and MacDonald will still remain on the UFC 152 main card, probably landing in the third position behind the two added headliners.
UFC 152 will take place on September 22nd from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The UFC 152 main card will air on pay-per-view following the prelims on FX and Facebook.
