Ryan Jimmo Shocks everyone, including Anthony Perosh at UFC 149
In the lead up to last night’s UFC 149 in Calgary, all the talk was of the two headliners entering their bouts riding long unbeaten streaks. Renan Barao was on a 28 fight unbeaten streak that included 18 in a row, while Hector Lombard was unbeaten in 25 straight with 20 wins in a row. No one was talking about the former MFC light heavyweight champion Ryan Jimmo who was making his Octagon debut at UFC 149 on a 16 fight winning streak.
That was until the Canadian made a massive statement with a 7 second knockout of Anthony Perosh in the opening preliminary bout on FX. Not a bad debut for Jimmo who needed just one punch to tie Duane Ludwig for the fastest knockout in UFC history. The two would meet in the center of the Octagon before a right hand to the jaw of Perosh that would send him into the cage and crashing onto the canvas as referee Josh Rosenthal rushed over to stop the fight in record tying time. The post fight celebratory robot dance that included the splits from Jimmo would actually last long than the fight.
In hindsight the third man on the card with a long winning streak heading into UFC 149 would be the one stealing the show.
To everyone’s defense though, coming into UFC 149 Ryan Jimmo hadn’t stopped a fighter with strikes since he defeated Rick Roufus back in 2008. In his time with the MFC, Jimmo had five decisions and one Doctor’s stoppage TKO victory, so he wasn’t known his one-punch knockout power. In fact while winning and defending the Maximum Fighting Championship light heavyweight crown Jimmo had been called boring at times for his out pointing style that lead him to wins over Emanuel Newton, Wilson Gouveia and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.
The 17th consecutive win from Ryan Jimmo keeps him one ahead of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (16) and two behind Renan Barao who earned his 19th consecutive win in the night’s main event to grab the interim bantamweight title over Urijah Faber. A lackluster performance from Hector Lombard in his UFC debut against Tim Boetsch snap his winning streak and moved Jimmo up a notch on the list.
What’s next for him is unknown but after last night’s knockout of the night performance you can rest assured Ryan Jimmo won’t be surprising his next opponent.
