What Retirement! Matt Hamill to face Roger Hollett at UFC 152
The retirement of UFC light heavyweight Matt Hamill lasted longer than many, but still it only lasted a year. Exactly one year ago today Matt Hamill made his last appearance in the Octagon and today he announced via his Facebook page that he was back!
“Hammer is back WITH a vengeance. I will fight on Sept. 22nd at Toronto, Canada. UFC 152”
Two days after Hamill was defeated by Alexander Gustafsson on August 6th at UFC 133, he announced on his official website that he had decided to retire. “Today is a sad day for me. After six years and 13 fights in the UFC I’m ready to hang up my gloves and retire from this amazing sport,” he wrote on August 8th.
At the time of his retirement, Matt Hamill was dealing with a lot on his plate besides just being a professional Mixed Martial Artist. Having been born deaf, his inspiring story about his early life and his wrestling career had been made into a movie in 2010. The movie was screened at several film festivals throughout 2010 and 2011 and was released in theaters on October 27, 2011.
With all that behind him now, the season three contestant on The Ultimate Fighter is returning to the Octagon on September 22nd at UFC 152. MMAJunkie.com has confirmed that his opponent will be promotional newcomer Roger Hollett as part of the UFC 152 preliminary card from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada.
Hollett (13-3) will make his UFC debut riding a five fight winning streak and most recently defeated John Hawk at Bellator 57. Matt Hamill (10-4) has fought all but one of his 14 professional MMA fights with the UFC and has a 9-4 record with notable wins over Mark Munoz, Tito Ortiz and Tim Boetsch.
