Will Fans ever see Ronda Rousey vs. Cris Cyborg?

| August 21, 2012 | Reply

The inevitable super fight is every fans dream, but it always has some road blocks or obstacles along the way. You would think pitting two men or two women against each other would be as easy as picking names out of a hat and sticking them together in a cage to let them duel it out, wrong! There are so many factors to setting up these fights that sometimes, it doesn’t even happen at all.

This is why the so-called “super fight” between Ronda Rousey and Cris Cyborg potentially won’t happen, and here are five reasons why. So let’s get started with the most obvious reason and get that one out-of-the-way.

Cyborg is suspended

After being fined, facing a one-year suspension and having her win reversed to a “no decision,” chances are we won’t see Cris Cyborg make an appearance in the cage until the beginning or middle of the 2013 year. By then, Ronda Rousey will possibly have two or three fights during that long period of time and why knows what happens during that time.

Strikeforce doesn’t have a 145 lbs. division

Due to the lack of female fighters in the 145 division, Strikeforce seemingly dissolved the division after the fact that its champion was suspended for PED’s. It forced everyone that was left in the division to either find a new home or make the cut to 135, which Ronda Rousey did. So reviving the division, after a fighter who hasn’t made an appearance in a division that hasn’t been showcased in a year, magically opens back up makes no sense.

Cris Cyborg

Cyborg can’t make 135 lbs.

Cyborg clearly stated that she would have trouble making the 135 pound division. She would have to lose muscle mass for a fight at 135 and when I look at pictures of her, that’s definitely possible. But Cyborg would rather keep all her muscle mass and power, something she is essentially known for, in order to make it a better fight. As opposed to showing up to the weigh-ins all drawn out and dehydrated, having to fight someone who is a stronger opponent in that division.

Strikeforce will most likely set up Ronda Rousey v Miesha Tate 2

Yup, I said it. I think that will most likely be what Strikeforce will start to hype up after Tate put on a spectacular three round war this past Saturday. If there were any other options for Rousey outside of Strikeforce, they would likely either be Sara McMann or Shayna Beszler as each of them are high-level grapplers who could possibly put up a fight against Rousey.

Rousey has no plans to move up or meet at a catchweight

And why should she, what does Ronda Rousey owe Cyborg by making this move? The division that is going to expand in WMMA is 135 pounds and under. If Cyborg wants to continue fighting and wants to be considered the best, the 135 lbs. division is where she is going to have to prove it, and not at a catch weight. And let’s be clear, she’s the one who has something to prove, not Ronda Rousey.

Who knows, all these reasons listed above could be completely wrong and they end up fighting in February. It could also end up being a co-headliner for a Lesnar vs. Fedor PPV that will happen in the UFC sometime shortly…….

Either way, it’s going to be up to Ronda Rousey and Cris Cyborg to make the fight happen and meet halfway or let it be talked about as the fight we will never get to see.

I am just a guy who is a BJJ practitioner and loves MMA. I'd be lying if I said I was a fan of MMA from the very start. I do remember watching guys like Oleg Taktarov and Paul “Polar Bear” Varlens but the sport just didn’t catch on to me, so I went back to pro wrestling. It wasn’t until I saw BJ Penn vs Din Thomas at UFC 32 that opened my eyes to the sport and my favorite MMA fighter of all time, The Prodigy BJ Penn. From then on I’ve aspired to contribute to the MMA community as much as I can whether it’s through articles, learning photography for live events, or taking video to create video logs or highlight videos for everyone to enjoy and see.
