Amidst the chaos, Alan Belcher is out!
In all the mayhem of UFC 151 being canceled, and fighter after fighter saying they would have stepped up, you may have missed Alan Belcher tweeting that he was ok with Vitor Belfort taking the Jon Jones fight. Belcher revealed he has a spinal fracture and he was unfortunately going to have to pull out of their UFC 153 fight anyway. Alan said the timetable for his return will be in November, and that he wants a top 5 guy. Belcher is on a four fight win streak with impressive wins over Jason MacDonald and Rousimar Palhares.
Belcher is one of the most underrated fighters in the UFC. He has three black belts, brazilian jiu jitsu, tae kwan do, and kickboxing, along with a brown belt in both judo and hayastan grappling. If it was not for his horrific eye injury, he may already be fighting for the title. Once he returns Belcher may only need one win to get his chance. Here are a few possible match ups upon the return of Alan Belcher.
Vitor Belfort – Since their fight at UFC 153 isn’t happening now, why not when he returns? This is a fight Alan Belcher has wanted for years. A proven legend that is still one of the best in the game. Belfort has the speed and power to really test Belcher. This would be a great return fight depending on what may happen at UFC 152 when he faces Jon Jones.
Chris Weidman - Chris is on a fast rise to the top, and still has many doubters. A fight against Belcher would put his name on the title map for sure. The bout could easily be a #1 contenders bout for a shot at Anderson Silva.
Mark Munoz - Mark is coming off a big loss to Weidman, and will likely need two wins to get back into title contention. Munoz is one of the few complete fighters in the division and is always a tough fight.
Michael Bisping - With a win over Brian Stann, Bisping is more than likely to get the next shot at Anderson Silva, but Silva is saying he is not returning until 2013 so Bisping may need one more fight.
Brian Stann - Even with a win over Bisping, Stann will need one or two more fights to get a title shot, so a fight with Belcher might be just what the doctor ordered.
With Belcher out these are my top 5 guys. Any of these will be a great return fight for Alan Belcher. Three of the top guys are fighting soon, so a win by any could fit in perfect for his return. Only time will tell who and when it will be for Alan Belcher but we hope for a speedy recover.
