Questions exiting UFC 152: Jones vs. Belfort
Last night the UFC returned not only to Toronto, Canada for UFC 152 but a return to action after a long six weeks absence. Not only were the fans hungry for some fighters but the fighters themselves were also ready to get back into the Octagon, as evident by their performances last night.
The 12 bout UFC 152 fight card brought a mixture of grueling wars, nasty submissions and jump out of your seat knockouts. Not to mention the UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones encountered his biggest scare to date and Dana White put the first-ever flyweight championship belt around the waist of Demetrious Johnson.
With all that said, as UFC 152 ended and the lights were turned out at the Air Canada Centre there were many fresh questions looming.
Will Charlie Brenneman and Walel Watson still be employed by the UFC?
It took less than two minutes combined for Charlie Brenneman and Walel Watson to lose their respective UFC 152 bouts.
Brenneman lost by TKO against Kyle Noke, dropping his second consecutive and third first round defeat out of his last four fights. Even though Brenneman is a superior wrestler to many of the fighters he’s faced, they haven’t lasted long enough for him to work his skill set.
Watson won his UFC debut against Joseph Sandoval in impressive fashion but has now lost three in a row after being submitted by Mitch Gagnon. Losing three consecutive fights in the UFC is usually the precursor to being released so Watson has to be worried.
What’s next for Michael Bisping?
After losing a close fight with Chael Sonnen that would have earned him that elusive middleweight title fight, Michael Bisping returned to his winning ways with a unanimous decision victory against Brian Stann. The Ultimate Fighter season 3 winner has won five of his last six and has a legitimate case for a shot at Anderson Silva’s UFC middleweight title. Problem is Silva is scheduled to fight next month and what the champion’s plans are after are anyone’s guess. Rumors of a possible super fight with Georges St. Pierre are swirling but GSP doesn’t fight until November. Many of the top middleweights are also currently scheduled to fight over the next three months, so the future for Bisping is cloudy for sure.
Who will face Demetrious Johnson in his first defense of the UFC flyweight title?
With the UFC flyweight division so young and crowning its first champion there is not a line of contenders waiting for their shot at the title. The most likely candidate would seem to be the winner of the October 5th bout between John Dodson and Jussier da Silva. Dodson is 2-0 in the UFC after winning season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter and Jussier da Silva has won five in a row and is considered one of the top 5 flyweights in the world.
How long will Jon Jones be out?
The champion had his right arm nearly ripped off by Vitor Belfort in the first round and was visibly in pain and favoring the arm after the fight. Jones felt like something was damaged in there but we are still waiting for word on just how bad the arm really is. Either way fans shouldn’t expect to see Jones back in the octagon in 2012.
With UFC 152 now in the book the promotion will make a quick turnaround with Saturday’s UFC on Fuel TV event in Nottingham, England.
