UFC on FUEL TV 5: Stefan Struve vs. Stipe Miocic Fight Night Bonuses
The fans in Nottingham, England showed up for UFC on FUEL TV 5 early and they were rewarded with a solid fight card. The card was filled with hometown favorites, including Dan Hardy who lives within walking distance of the Capital FM Arena but the crowd made all the fighters fill at home.
The 11 bouts on the UFC on FUEL TV 5 fight card saw two submission finishes, five knockout finishes (2 KO’s / 3 TKO’s) and just four fights going the distance. The fighters made things tough on Dana White and the UFC to pick the “Fight Night Bonuses” the four that were awarded the bonuses received an extra $40,000 on top of the payday.
Knockout of the Night: Brad Pickett
They don’t call Brad Pickett one punch for nothing. Pickett and Yves Jabouin were going toe to toe before a right uppercut from Pickett reminded everyone that “One Punch” is not just a nickname. The uppercut came under the defense of Jabouin and landed flush on the jaw, sending him to the canvas. The knocked spoiled things for Robert Peralta who was the front-runner for the award after his 23 second knocked of Jason Young in the UFC on FUEL TV 5 opening bout.
Submission of the Night: Matt Wiman
The Matt Wiman vs. Paul Sass bout got some early talk as a submission of the night candidate but most would have picked Sass and not Wiman. They would have been wrong though because Wiman turned the table on Sass. After going for multiple submission attempts, Sass found himself locked in an armbar, against the cage, unable to escape and tapping out. The submission win was the fifth of Wiman’s career.
Fight of the Night: Stefan Struve vs. Stipe Miocic
Maybe not the choice others would have picked but it’s hard to argue that their two round bout wasn’t a back and forth fight. Miocic was able to take away the reach of Struve in the opening round but a few adjustments from the seven footer turn the fight in his favor. Struve used his jab better early in round two and then his power later in the round to stop the once undefeated Struve. For Struve, he has now won four in a row and “in the mix” at heavyweight.
