UFC Releases Five Fighters, including Charlie Brenneman
The UFC this week released five of their fighters, two of which most recently fought on last month’s UFC 152 fight card. All of the five fighters are coming of back to back defeats inside the Octagon and all but one of them has a losing record with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Charlie Brenneman (15-5, 4-4 UFC) – Brenneman started out his UFC career going 3-1, including a big upset over Rick Story in a fight he took on short notice. Since that win though he lost three of four and was finished each time in the first round. Brenneman is a scrappy fighter that got thrown into the deep end after the big win over Story and should be able to earn his way back into the UFC with a few wins elsewhere.
Tommy Hayden (8-2, 0-2 UFC) – Hayden came into the UFC undefeated but leaves after two consecutive losses. Making things worse for him was that both of his defeats came in the opening rounds via submission.
Eiji Mitsuoka (18-9-2, 0-2 UFC) – The Japanese fighter made his UFC debut at UFC 144 in Saitama, Japan against fellow Japanese fighter Takanori Gomi, where he lost via second round TKO. He would drop down to featherweight for his next bout but the results would be the same as he lost by TKO to Nik Lentz.
Walel Watson (9-5, 1-3 UFC) – Watson, like Charlie Brenneman fought of the UFC 152 preliminary card. The bantamweight made an impressive debut inside the Octagon a year ago with a first round TKO over Joseph Sandoval but could not build off that win, losing his last three fights.
Michihiro Omigawa (13-12-1, 1-6 UFC) – After a 0-2 stint with the UFC several years ago, Omigawa made his return last year against Chad Mendes at UFC 126. With no easy fight inside the Octagon the Japanese fighter lost his last two fights, went just 1-4 overall and leaves with all seven of his UFC fights ending via decision.
Of the five, only Charlie Brenneman makes you raise an eyebrow at the decision to be released. Yes he lost his last two but looking at the fighters that defeated him, the UFC could have given him one more shot.
